The Garden Route a new Online Publication

The Garden Route is the new online publication by Garden Route Publishing. The Purpose is to provide free online information about topics around the Garden Route as well as to be a useful tool for South Africans who would like to profit from the positive aspects of the Internet in our local and global society.

The Garden Route has been initiated by Yorgo Nestoridis from YORGOO Publishing, joined by Bianca Gubalke who have been inspired by the Garden Route Directory Project elaborated for Hanno Coetzee. Working on that latter project it appeared that there is an increasing demand for online services according to international standards and prices in South Africa.

“The Garden Route” is focused on bridging between low-tech live and the virtual world by making the best technology and the most personalized services accessible to anyone.

The Garden Route Web Site

The Garden Route web site is powered by YORGOO Press, a Semiomantics script prepared and tuned by Yorgo Nestoridis. The formula used serves as a test for a typical local publication as it can be set up. The site will promote specifically efforts from the area of the Garden Route to develop business and services online, and extend it’s services then to South Africa.

The Garden Route is a Non Profit and Non-Commercial site

The Garden Route is a non profit and non-commercial website, it’s a service for all those who want to join and use it. The Garden Route makes services available to a wide public and is open to contributions from the public to design a dynamic picture of every day life along the Garden Route, from artistic creativity to business and from agricultural to touristic developments, from personal online activity to online business building. The Garden Route is a Mirror and aims to bring additional opportunity to express views and opinions to a large readership way beyond the Garden Route.

Start-up Promo

To start its activity, The Garden Route, in a joined effort with Hosting South Africa, will sponsor 1001 fully equipped unlimited cPanel Hosting accounts to South Africans who are interested to get their web site online without material barrier. Hosting south Africa hosts co.za domains as a well as all current international domains.

The short term Goal

The Garden Route will be ready for its first full size edition by end of May. By that time TGR expects to be already well placed on Google Search Engines in as much as its targeted keywords are concerned to provide contributors with the best possible visibility and exposure. The Garden Route will then continue to support local efforts and content as well as the local internet penetration.

Further Recovery possible

Vouliagmeni, March 8, 2009 — by Yorgo Nestoridis

Recovery

Recovery

1. Back-ups: as on ChiHosters we offer serverside back-up fetures to resellers at a minimal cost: as soon as our own site is back up and functional we will put this feature back on offer.

2. As we have reported earlier (Update 4), all automated back-ups have been installed and are running.

3. Further Recovery: We continue to spend hard bucks and time on further recovery. All further recoveries need to be done manually and it takes about 1 hour per user account (pro rates apply), whereas I am aware that some resellers have quite a lot of them.

Here is the deal: there are some sites with hardly any content where it s easier to do new set-ups. Let’s not waste time and money on those.

Upload

Upload

Owners must send us a list with usernames (only User names) which they want us to recover: please don’t include accounts with hardly any content as the time needed is the same as for a content rich site, but it’s simply not worth doing it.

Please send the lists to my personal email at yorgo(at)yorgo.net, copy to Zo at admin(at)cashbizz.com, include your name and the username of your whm account. With out the list of usernames of your customers we are unable to find the sites and matching databases you wish to recover.

Please get a feel from the below about what we consider being worth while recoveing.

4. Ycademy.net and Semiomantics.net

The recovery of both networks is about impossible and be it just for cost reasons. On Ycademy we project about 120 hours of work and on Semiomantics about 100. On a per sub-domain cost of $85 that’s heavy, considering namely that each user site will need another input of at least 1 hour from our side to reconfigure and make the site visible. We have run a test on semiomantics.com where we were able to recover to date data!

I believe that we can do better by rebuilding these two networks from scratch and to build them accoring to the publishing model and the concepts we have started implementing during our last seminar. As usual, Ycademy Proswill get the latest technology and the best sites out there.

5. Yconomy, Fun-shopping, BrendaBaker

We will tempt to recover these two sites.

6. Gardenroute Directory, GardenRouteHosting, GardenRoute Publishing, HC.com

We are expecting a response about quality of data; as these sites are custom built’ a recovery is worth while.

7. Sites we will not recover but rebuild

http://astroblogy.com
http://gardenroutemagazine.com
http://nurtinsider.com
http://yorgoopress.com

All the above sites have been built by Semiomantics and we will re-build them ASAP.

8. In-house back-ups vs. rebuilding

We dispose of in-house back-ups of some of the large sites we will not recover, such as Ycademy.net. However loading these back-ups which are of cnsiderable size 5–10 GB is about as slow as rebuilding and improving the set up. We will address Ycademy pro users separately to collect information needed for the base of the new network.

9. Responsibility

Please, let me insist on the fact that each site owner is responsible for his site and that backing up your work is more than a matter of basic maintenance; it’s a matter of self-respect and the value you attribute to your work, time and money spent. Some times we have to learn the hard way to estimate values. This may well be the case for some of us this time as well.

Host Masters: it is clearly your responsibility to back-up or to out-source backing up your customers’ accounts!

A special Host Master Call this week will deal with security and maintenance issues and I would appreciate could all concerned Host Masters be present. Watch out for a special announcement.

10. Impact

Finally the impact of the issue will be limited. I understand customers impatience, however it’s often better to recover a site after a few days than to redo all the work again.

We have to learn our lessons from this incident. In as much as I am concerned: we will build in automated back-up features into all our hosting programs and make them a standard feature. The same we will do with Semiomantics scripts where we are testing an automated database back-up feature introduced into the latest script release planned for the March Seminar.

Thank you for your supportive and kind comments — it’s one of the greatest gifts on earth to be able work with friends and positive spirits!

How to Move your WordPress Blog

Copyright © 2010 Yorgo Nestoridis. Visit the original article at http://yorgonestoridis.com/yorgo-nestoridis-development/wordpress-yorgo-nestoridis-development/how-to-move-your-wordpress-blog.

Move your WP Blog to a new Host

This tutorial shows step by step how to move your blog and domain to a new host.

Back up your website

  1. Use your FTP utility and download your blog root folder with all the files and sub folders to your desktop.
  2. Go to your cPanel and from there to phpMyAdmin and Export your Database (tar.gz) to your desktop.

Load to new Host

  1. Either you create a new hosting account or you create an ‘add on domain’ on an existing hosting account. Name the folder ‘yourdomain.com’, whereas ‘yourdomain’ is the name of the domain you move.
  2. Create a database, ideally with same name, user-name and pass (if you change any of these, you will have to modify the corresponding entries in ‘wp-config.php’).
  3. Go to phpMyAdmin on new host and import your database.
  4. Upload the content of your blog root folder to the new host using your FTP utility.
  5. Make sure your permission settings are correct: make the uploads folder and sub-folders writable (777) as well as cache folders (eventually under wp-content).
  6. Check your wp-config.php file and make sure the Database name, user and pass are correct.

Test your blog: access using : http://IP-Address/~username/addon-domain/

Change DNS on your Domain

  1. Go to your domain hosting account, and edit DNS settings: point your domain to the new host entering the new host’s DNS.
  2. Wait for the DNS to propagate and start blogging.

Need help?

Just use the comment form here below for questions you may have.

Want us to move your site?

We will charge $20 per blog to move. So if you have a domain with 10 add-on domains or sub-folders with each a WP blog in it, it will be $220. Also for large set-ups with DB beyond 500 MB and a folder structure beyond 1 GB, please ask for a quote.

PS: Moving your WordPress Blog to a new domain is another story. Please ask for a tutorial and or a quote.

Branding your Business online: Hosting

By Zo Nicholas

Branding your Business online

The next step to Branding your Business online after purchasing and registering your domain is purchasing a hosting package to suit your business needs. Hosting is the step between your business and publishing it to the worldwide web. Offline a business takes its marketing materials to a publisher to be published and then distributed, online its to a hosting provider where your marketing material is made public online.

Hosting

There are any companies online that offer hosting packages, with varying features and prices. Most anyone can afford to buy basic hosting pack as prices have fallen over the past few years. However, one should not only be dictated by the price alone but also by the services that the hosting company provides.

Hosting

Best Affordable Hosting

Identifying your business needs goes a long way to selecting the hosting package that will suit your budget and your specifications. At Small Business Consulting  we can help you assess your hosting needs and suggest  the best possible solution, however simple or complex it may be. If you are an internet marketer your needs will go way beyond a simple fun site that often you can get for free.

Hosting Features

Here are some hosting features in order of priority that I consider to be of paramount importance when considering and selecting a web hosting provider.  As a user of various hosting companies I realise these to be important:

Customer Support

I remember when I first started how important this service was:  good, reliable customer support, providing technical assistance  and solutions as and when needed. Even today when something goes amiss it is important to have assistance from customer support.

Backups

It is important to know that the hosting provider can provide backup and has a regular backup routine in place. This however should not stop you from setting up your own backup and maintenance routine.

Web Space

Your account will require a certain amount of web space, and as you grow you need reassurance that you can also expand according to your needs.

Reliability and Access

No hosting company can really guarantee 100% uptime, those really unforeseen downtime’s do happen as well occasional short downtime for major maintenance. A good hosting company will deal with emergencies immediately and there should be very little disruption to the running of your online business. Speedy access to a website is also an important feature to considered in order that visitors are not lost by slow working websites.

At ChiHosters we provide an excellent service with hosting plans starting at:

* No Limit Shared Hosting: U$35 per year.

*Semiomantics Pro Hosting for Advanced Semiomantics Publishing: U$ 29.95 per month

* Hosting Reseller Plan (WHM): U$99.99 per month

* VSM 20GB Allocated Virtual Managed Server: U$150.00 per month
Sell WHM Reseller Packs

•Increased configuration and flexibility
•Increased uptime and security
•Full Root access
•100% Management and Monitoring – This means we worry about your server, and you worry about your sales!
•The ability to sell reseller accounts
•Based on a Dual AMD Opteron 275, 8GB ram and 20GB HD space dedicated to you.

Other options are also available on demand. Discussing your specific needs with a Consultant or hosting providing can result in a unique and satisfactory hosting solution designed especially for you.

Graphic Design Services

Graphic Design Services

Once you have decided on the product or service you want to offer, promote and sell you need to make this fact known as widely as possible on the Internet – meaning you have to advertise in various ways. In my case it’s – amongst others – Graphic Design Services… as part of the Web Design (Website Design).

Bianca Gubalke Design

Graphic Design Services

Although Graphic Design Services are part of the Web Design (Website Design), I differentiate a little as to what one sees on a website, and what happens in the background, meaning the Coding. In most cases both go together, however, not always.

Semiomantics NewsCast Scripts

As not everybody is hot on learning about coding – html and css etc – one of the many advantages of using a Semiomantics NewsCast Script is that there are specific hooks for advertising purposes – eg. banners and ads – in the Dashboard of the Blog where simple html codes can easily be inserted, like the image link and the website link it leads to – as easy as that.

Web Design South Africa

Hosting South Africa by Bianca GubalkeAs I am living in South Africa, it is in my interest to also promote “Bianca Gubalke Design” in my own country, never mind the global aspect of the Internet. This becomes even more relevant with one of our next projects – Hosting South Africa – being in the finishing round offering cheap and unlimited hosting services – like R1 a day Hosting – in South Africa.

I will report more on that in due time… however, you may have seen my advertising in the past – here’s the ‘zebra-stamp version’.

Web Design South Africa will highly benefit from this new exciting as well as timely venture; more on this in due time.

PayPal and South Africa

When setting up a business online it is critical to give our global as well as national customers a safe, fast and user-friendly payment option, or rather several of them.

In this respect we down here in South Africa are extremely handicapped – and this even today, in 2009! Why?

PayPal is the largest online payment gateway and in most countries in the world – but not in our’s. Yes sure, we can pay – our ZARs are good enough for that -, but we may not receive, meaning: be paid, a single cent. And this in our world today… and this while everyone with a high ranking on the publicity and income scale – be it the British Royals or Michael Schumacher or Richard Branson to just name a few… they all live here or at least spend part of the year in our beautiful country… that just received the official Fifa Cup a few days ago down here in the mother city, Cape Town, to set the stage for the Soccer World Cup 2010.

Wouldn’t that occasion be a fabulous opportunity for PayPal to recognize South Africa and allow vibrant and talented South African entrepreneurs to grow and expand their Business Online and – WOW! – even make money? As the rest of the world does?

“We are the world… we are the children…” how long do we continue listening without hearing… and even less becoming… ONE world, that is!

Your comments are welcome :)

Dali Transformation Tiles

This is just for fun, but a nice way to create never seen before designs:

The technique used is just based on splitting and mirroring an image. I will use a design from Bianca Gubalke. I am sure good old Salvador would have loved this and he would have added some distortions…:-).
