About Websites and Blogs on Google

The Internet has become the competitive environment comparable to Formula One: only the best with the best material and skills make it to Google Top 10.

Yesterday, I posted an article with the title “About Websites and Blogs” and tested its Performance on Google. Within minutes it was on page 4 of 281 million page returns. Good… but not good enough for Semiomantics XO! But then this was just my first attempt at conquering a major keyword – just imagine: 281,000,000 search returns, i.e. competitors. Enough visitors  to blow up Monte Carlo!

After posting these results, and just rising to a beautiful South African winter morning: sunny and chilly yet full of promise, I just had another look at the status of my performance of  “About Websites and Blogs” on Google.

WOW! Lo and behold… it went faster than I thought – this keeps surprising and stunning me: the article has already reached Google Top 10 – a position 4 ahead of 280,000,000!

Semiomantics XO at its best – simply unbeatable in combination with Semiomantics Web Design!

About Websites and Blogs Performance and the Royal Wedding

As usual, my article on my Author Blog – on a Semiomantics XO Script – made it fast and furiously to the first pages of Google – not yet Google Top 10 – but search returns are a daunting 281 MILLION!!! Within just half an hour I found my post on spot 43 on 281,000,000… that’s lots more in numbers than were at the Royal Wedding today ! So let’s see where this little after-shot takes me.

As part of our duties in Semiomantics Web Design we monitor the performance of our blogs, websites and online publishing. If we don’t appear where we expect to be within a relatively short timeframe – say a few minutes – then we check what went wrong or what has changed. This constant control ensures that our clients can rely on the efficiency – and visibility – of their websites and blogs designed by the Semiomantics Team.

About Websites and Blogs

About Websites and Blogs

As we are preparing for the Ycademy Seminar April 2011 this coming weekend, we will realize that there will be a lot about websites and blogs.

With our Semiomantics XO Scripts we know that we have the most efficient tool in hands when it comes to visibility on Google Top 10 as well as other search engines. That’s already more than the battle for top rankings won. However, besides search engine optimized blogs we also want a captivating look so people who find our posts and articles on Google enjoy what they see and find what they are looking for – and once they’ve found it there has to be a simple, quick and reliable sales pipeline.

About Websites and Blogs

When I talk about websites and blogs to customers, I often come across some underlying resistance as concerns blogging. It’s not seen as ‘professional’ as a ‘real’ website – and it takes some explanation as to the dynamics of Online Publishing to show that nothing could be further from the truth.

Therefore, why not combine both? Meaning the blog for the search engines and the website look for … well, the look?

The question is how?

How to combine a Website and a Blog

The solution is to combine the website and the blog. This we can do by integrating the Blog as part of the Website.

With WordPress 3 this has become easy as the Homepage can be anything – meaning it doesn’t necessarily have to be a blog layout – and this without altering the optimization. We can basically distance ourselves from a website layout that looks like a blog.

The question, however, is: if I design an attractive Frontpage, how many people that find my blog post will get exposed to what I show them on that homepage – or frontpage as I call it to differentiate?

In my latest website project under development I have a header, a couple of sprites, a navigation bar and a footer at the bottom. Instead of the sprites I could imagine a slider – the intent is the same: each item is linked to the next step – be it fixed ads, be it the shop or salespage, a Newsletter signup or corresponding articles on the blog. Here, the Blog is basically a command tab on the navigation menu of this frontpage. My blog is not my main element – my products and corresponding salespages or shop are. Accordingly, everything focuses on those.

With a search-engine optimized blog as we use in our Semiomantics Web Design, most people get to our website by finding a post on Google. Therefore they will end up on a post. My goal is now to guide them to the products I sell – say some form of Consulting. With the frontpage I designed I have: a header, 5 sprites and a menu bar. They are all linked to ads, articles, product presentation pages or a shop – meaning that they take anyone directly or indirectly to the product: Consulting.

This is all about the frontpage with its website look; it has nothing to do with a blog.

The next step is the blog… and the question is: what do I show on the inner pages? Either someone clicks – on the frontpage – on BLOG – or they come to this BLOG via a post that attracted them after finding it on Google. I can now make this ‘Blog section’ very attractive by creating for each category another header (which could be a slider).

If I have a Category ‘Web Design’ this would mean that whenever a post is shown from that Category, a web design specific header would show with a whole slider or an ad on top that relates to Web Design. It could be the same with sprites if used here as well. It means that we could create an environment that relates to what the content underneath is going to be.

If I have 4 Categories, I create 4 headers and add advertising to those. A site doesn’t have to look like a blog. If I have an ad for some ‘Consulting’, it should lead to a static page or salespage – on this website.

If I sell a Semiomantics Script, I put up a salespage on my blog for a Semiomantics website – load a salespage – and add a BUY NOW button on that page.

Alternatively, if this is a website for a hotel that offers 5 major services, I would show those on a slider and have 5 buttons for 5 services – possibly plus the reservation button or contact button. In this case, when we plan a blog and create a strategy for publishing – eg a hotel – the product range doesn’t change over time. The products are clear – say accommodation, restaurant, conferencing etc.  This is static knowledge that we want to promote from the blog by dynamically posting posts to the blog… which creates traffic on Google…  so people are guided to our product-related slider (which obviously shows beautiful images that invite to click…) and thus empathy is created. Immediately.

other important information may be underneath on sprites or in the sidebar so that people find fast and easily what they came from.

As we see, we are shifting away from just the normal blog view of things.

In terms of normal publishing, if a customer has a need and wants no typical blog but a ‘real’ website – maybe a website corresponding to their hobby and something that looks nice when people go to their site – then it’s not a blog layout they are looking for but something specifically designed… something that stands out.

Most people look for edited content because they want their products defined on the website. Of course, the cheapest marketing is promoting their editorials by using a blog that gets their work up to Google. The only alternative would be to buy Google ads! As they would then be spending money for every click they get, this is where it gets expensive.

If before we have been addressing predominantly a blogging community, we can still do that… but we can also go a step further and offer any kind of layout while using the blog more in the background where it still does the same trick of getting traffic 24/7/365 and attracting Google… meaning visitors. However, now that we reach Google with everything we publish, the place visitors come to once they find it on Google must capture their interest and ensure that the first impression creates Empathy… and then our content does the rest to max out on conversion.

Semiomantics XO

The good news is that WordPress combined with Semiomantics XO allows us a lot of flexibility to fulfill even extravagant customer’s requests and needs.

More information on how Blogs are integrated into websites will be discussed and explained at this weekend’s Ycademy Seminar April 2011 – don’t miss it!

Easter Message with a Difference

Easter Message with a Difference

Easter was always my favourite time as a child… it’s when the first rains hit the bushveld of what was then South West Africa (Namibia today)… It meant relief at last after sometimes months of scorching heat that had left everything dry, brown and burnt by the sun.

Water! Rains! They meant that Nature would recover almost overnight, greeting the new days with blooming carpets of morning stars and fresh green grass and songs of joy and gratitude rising from amongst the soft new leaves of acacias and gently swaying restios. Not long and the herds would be back, graceful antelopes… springbok, eland, kudu, wildebeest and zebra – all feasting on that incredible abundance… and many giving birth to their offspring.

Birth! Renewal! New life repeating itself, miracle by miracle .  .  .  just as the little emerald sunbird I captured on the red bottlebrush outside my studio where it greets me every day.

Easter Message from Bianca Gubalke Web Design

As much as water is the life force we all depend on, it ‘s also a master of destruction. It gives Life. It takes Life. And it transforms Life.

This year, my thoughts go out to the people in Japan – the normal people, the families, the kids, the human beings that went through enormous suffering – and they still do. They do so with an Attitude we can only admire and learn from.. and if what we learn really sinks in, it will also transform us.

This is why I wish to share with you an Easter Message with a Difference. What you will find is that regardless which turn the waters take, what we need to see is the miracle of transformation in whatever happens.

Easter Message from Japan

Yes, it is basically an Easter Message from Japan, but had I called it “Japanese Boy Teaches Lesson In Sacrifice” would you have shown an interest in it? Sacrifices are not ‘in’ amongst those who are comfortable with their lives, and words have lost their meaning as it’s rare to see fulfillment following any promise made – and this is where innocence ends and trust is lost forever.

This is why real stories of simple yet profound Action are so transformative. This is why I invite you to read this “Easter Message from Japan” that was first published on ShanghaiDaily.com and sent to me by my dear friends in the Far East who know Japan all too well – thank you. May I start with the Editor’s Note (start quote):

“This letter, written by Vietnamese immigrant Ha Minh Thanh working in Fukushima as a policeman to a friend in Vietnam, was  posted on New America Media on March 19. It is a testimonial to the strength of the Japanese spirit, and an interesting slice of life near the epicenter of Japan ‘s crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It was translated by NAM editor Andrew Lam, author of “East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres.”  Shanghai Daily condensed it.
Brother,
How are you and your family? These last few days, everything was in chaos. When I close my eyes, I see dead bodies. When I open my  eyes, I also see dead bodies. Each one of us must work 20 hours a day, yet I wish there were 48hours in the day, so that we could continue helping and rescuing folks. We are without water and electricity, and food rations are near zero. We barely manage to move refugees before there are new orders to move them elsewhere.

I am currently in Fukushima, about 25 kilometers away from the nuclear power plant. I have so much to tell you that if I could  write it all down, it would surely turn into a novel about human relationships and behaviors during times of crisis.

People here remain calm – their sense of dignity and proper behavior are very good – so things aren’t as bad as they could be. But given another week, I can’t guarantee that things won’t get to a point where we can no longer provide proper protection and order. They are humans after all, and when hunger and thirst override dignity, well, they will do whatever they have to do. The government is trying to provide supplies by air, bringing in food  and medicine, but it’s like dropping a little salt into the ocean.
Brother, there was a really moving incident. It involves a little Japanese boy who taught an adult like me a lesson on how to behave like a human being.
Last night, I was sent to a little grammar school to help a charity organization distribute food to the refugees. It was a  long line that snaked this way and that and I saw a little boy around 9 years old. He was wearing a T-shirt and a pair of   shorts.

It was getting very cold and the boy was at the very end of the line. I was worried that by the time his turn came there wouldn’t be any food left. So I spoke to him. He said he was at school when the earthquake happened. His father worked nearby and was driving to the school. The boy was on the third floor balcony when he saw the tsunami sweep his father’s car away.

I asked him about his mother. He said his house is right by the  beach and that his mother and little sister probably didn’t make it. He turned his head and wiped his tears when I asked about his relatives.
The boy was shivering so I took off my police jacket and put it on him.

That’s when my bag of food ration fell out. I picked it up and gave it to him. “When it comes to your turn, they might run out of food. So here’s my portion. I already ate. Why don’t you eat it?”

The boy took my food and bowed. I thought he would eat it right away, but he didn’t. He took the bag of food, went up to where the line ended and put it where all the food was waiting to be distributed.

I was shocked. I asked him why he didn’t eat it and instead added it to the food pile.

He answered: “Because I see a lot more people hungrier than I am. If I put it there, then they will distribute the food equally.”

When I heard that I turned away so that people wouldn’t see me cry. A society that can produce a 9-year-old who understands the concept of sacrifice for the greater good must be a great society, a great people.

Well, a few lines to send you and your family my warm wishes. The hours of my shift have begun again.

Ha Minh Thanh

Lessons to learn from Japan

10 Lessons to learn from Japan:

1. THE CALM
Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2. THE DIGNITY
Disciplined queues for water and groceries. Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. THE ABILITY
The incredible architects, for instance. Buildings swayed but didn’t fall.

4. THE GRACE
People bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could get something.

5. THE ORDER
No looting in shops. No honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.

6. THE SACRIFICE
Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

7. THE TENDERNESS
Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.

8. THE TRAINING
The old and the children, everyone knew exactly what to do. And they did just that.

9. THE MEDIA
They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins. No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10. THE CONSCIENCE
When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly!”

(End quote)

Let Easter be your time of Renewal and Transformation… and let’s thank those who lead with the true Spirit of Humanity.

Happy Easter!

Videos on SlideDeck

Videos on SlideDeck

While it is possible to show videos on SlideDeck Pro – and I have done so – I haven’t found the ideal solution yet. Here are my reasons why.

Videos on SlideDeck by Bianca Gubalke

Videos on SlideDeck

The above screenshot features a video on SlideDeck – namely the short documentary “SELAMAT” displayed as a vertical slider item under Media Design. You can see the YouTube Video as shown on my article HERE.

To center this embedded YouTube Video correctly, I used the HTML Editor and centering tags: <div align=”center”> YouTube Code </div>.

This looked perfect on my screen, however, while I continued adding new slides to the same SlideDeck and had to update a few times, the first tag kept disappearing – with the result that I ended up with the large video as on the screenshot above, meaning not at all framed as intended.

I further noticed that when people looked at this on an Apple Mac, the same picture as on the screenshot showed, while it was perfectly framed on my screen!

What was worse is that when someone clicked on the Video to actually watch it, it would play – however, the slider would continue to move. This may be something interesting to remember for an audio… but videos are made to be watched. Therefore, there is an issue I haven’t solved as yet. Accordingly, I removed the slide with the video by simply deleting it.

Without experimenting and testing we just never know… Anyone with a real solution, please leave a comment :)

SlideDeck Pro Slides

SlideDeck Pro Slides

It’s been a busy week here working on various projects that I have on my desk. My last post referred to SlideDeck Pro that I installed on my author blog. I also mentioned that I may end up completely changing the look of the jQuery slider. Well this I have done, having been not totally satisfied with the first version.

SlideDeck Pro Slides

SlideDeck Pro Slides

As you can see from the screenshot it is a very different look from the previous one and very focused. The slides convey the message, whereas the rest of the site can be very minimalist directing viewers to other less important topics.
The SlideDeck is a very efficient way for any business, or individual, to display his/her business products to the public, where each slide leads to a relevant product page. With this display, marketing a single product or multiple products is just a matter of creating attractive slides. I have a few projects here that I am working on where this will benefit not only the business but the customers too.

More will follow…

Follow Semiomantics

Follow Mantis, Semiomantics

Follow Mantis … or listen to its message when it appears so clearly in your face as it did here … LIVE on my screen at the Wednesday evening Ycademy Call… the praying mantis right next to the new Semiomantics XO 3.1… Consider it as a divine messenger, a visual expression of your inner voice, reminding you to be or become calm, still and very much in synch with your next movements.

Had I listened last Wednesday right after the call, I would have saved myself a lot of pain and physical damage when moving too fast in the dark, slipping on a stone staircase and falling down backwards. . . and I usually do things thoroughly.

Follow Semiomantics by Bianca Gubalke

Just one sensitive person outside on the terrace under the Milky Way noticed… but was hushed  “Relax…it must have been an owl.”

Follow Mantis, Semiomantics

The mantis – meaning “prophet” or “seer” in Greek – has been revered in many ancient cultures and reminds us to work on being in balance within our mind and soul… our ‘inner self’… even and especially amidst the chaos that has such an iron grip on our lives these days, there’s almost no escape. Each day is filled with many routines that we follow almost automatically, however, within us must still be that conviction and certainty of serving a higher purpose. What is right for the little daily things to do also applies for the bigger picture. This demands Vision of where and how we see ourselves based on who we are and how we feel about ourselves. As life is full of surprises and we should embrace the Unknown, we cannot always know what the 100% right thing is for us to do to move forward.

However. . .

Praying Mantis and Intuition

This is where that little “inner voice”, our Intuition, comes in… and I believe it’s the best advisor we can ask for, something we should never ignore… just as to our Bushmen the Praying Mantis is “…the voice of the infinite in the small”.

What better description for “Intuition”?

Interestingly, there are times when a praying mantis suddenly appears and accompanies me in its inquisitive, quiet way… while going through its own growth cycles… looking at me with its huge glistening eyes, its long antennas sensing the air and its forearms held up like in prayer, which gave it its significant name.

Scepticism about Intuition

While I meet more and more amazing people who confess they should be listening much more to their Inner Voices, there is a lot of Scepticism about Intuition out there.

Funny, as a child I didn’t even think about it – it was part of me. Just normal. Today, nothing much has changed, just that with reflection we analyze and define things more accurately and our gratitude grows with our awareness. Still, for many people anything one cannot see, feel or hear simply does not exist. Not much has changed since the earth was flat and the center of the Universe, really. Yet, in a world where only the size of one’s bank account matters, this is sad yet not astonishing.

The challenge is therefore to find answers in places one least expects it.

Having been tied to my bed for a couple of days, I finally got to read a very interesting book a dear friend gave me for my birthday:  The remarkabable life of US Government Psychic Spy 001 – I will write more about this later.

My interest in the matter is threefold:

1. I am highly interested in the matter due to personal experiences reaching far back into my childhood;

2.I have come across a lot of intrigueing material on the Internet that attracted my attention yet never managed to fully convince me in my quest for knowledge and understanding;

3. and lastly and most importantly, I am working on a website on Psychic Reading.

For those interested in the matter – and in learning more about Intuition – I highly recommend this informative book which I will discuss once I am through, yet here an excerpt:

“What is material about my time in Vietnam is how much I came to rely on my gut or intuitive nature. Many times I instinctively knew I wasn’t safe, or that I was somehow exposed to danger. The small voice inside my gut became a lot louder and I listened. Inside and outside the base camp, I always listened to my inner voice, did whatever it suggested, and did without question. If I felt an urge to get into a bunker, I did so immediately. If it was a gut feeling to zig rather than zag, then that’s what I did. I once abandoned a Jeep and walked back to the base camp on advice of my internal voices. To the consternation of my first sergeant, the Jeep was never seen again. [...]

My life was saved more than once by simply doing what my inner voices suggested, even if at the time it seemed foolish or stupid, or that I might embarrass myself. Some began to notice. Others began to do whatever I did, just from watching me.”

My Praying Mantis has moved on. I saw her the last time yesterday evening. She had grown enormously! As I got up for the first time, softly putting down my badly sprained foot, she was on her way out through the window. Our eyes met. Her presence was as large as mine, clearly so. In some cultures the mantis shows the way… and she was on her way out. Makes me think. Those large, piercing, shiny eyes. A light transparent green with black dots. . .

Quote:

“Follow Mantis” means putting that core aspect of yourself, your foundation of Spirit, at the helm and let it direct your intellect and ultimately your life.”

The way out is the answer.

Intuition…  I will be back with more on this important chapter soon.

SlideDeck Performance

SlideDeck Performance

The new SlideDeck is a brilliant feature for any private or commercial website, especially if created with Semiomantics Web Design. Depending on the purpose of the blog or website, it can become the major point of interest leading the readers directly to the relevant information – in my case in most cases my Web Design Showcase or websites I created for Customers. The rest of the blog can be rather minimalistic as in my case where I just show three pictures in three columns and their relevant titles:

Bianca Gubalke on SlideDeck Pro

It’s pure Semiomantics XO with minimal custom style entries… but yes, there are some little details I changed for the look I wanted. Just another example. There will be more!

SlideDeck Performance

While I was thrilled about the performance of yesterday’s article based on my slogan “Web Design with Passion” ahead of some serious millions of Google entries, what is even better is to appear on the first page of SlideDeck itself!

Here’s a quick screenshot of the excellent SlideDeck Performance – or rather my various articles about my work and experiments with my new SlideDeck Pro: position 4 of 544,000 competitors on the keyword “SlideDeck” on Google Top 10:

“Web Design with Passion” is my Slogan – here on another version integrating the SlideDeck Pro on my Author Blog, using rounded corners but this time allowing more text and small pictures to feature in the left and right columns:

While I love Web Design . . . what counts for our customers is visibility on Google!

So let’s see how my post – just a few minutes ago under the title “Fullscreen Video in SlideDeck” – performed on Google Top 10:

Brilliantly! That’s Semiomantics XO 3.1 – brand-new and definitely at the top!
