Semiomantics XO 2011

If you were one of the lucky ones who managed to buy a ticket and attend the Ycademy Seminar this month, you were certainly in for a special treat with not only a brand new Semiomantics XO2011 but also with all the bonuses that came with it. All participants are well and truly equipped for a very profitable year ahead.

WordPress Semiomantics XO2011 Seminar

Having been one of the lucky attendees I came away from the seminar with my head spinning with ideas, and now to put them down on paper and explore them.

The whole seminar was a hands on workshop, discovering the workings of the new Semiomantics XO 2011 and applying some hardcoding to achieve the required result.

Here is an examples of the flexibility of the theme achieved during the seminar, a beautiful Elegant Design together with a dynamic photo display. An eye catching result.

Semiomantics Elegant Design

I have been totally amazed by the flexibility of the new XO, whether I  want just a plain blog, a newspaper looking theme or just a photo gallery, or anything else, all these are possible with this theme. Really amazing!

As a developer I have had the privilege to be able to access the scripts and software ahead of others, but  all this will be available shortly in the Semiomantics Store and in my Small Busines Store. To be continued…

If you wish to know more you can contact me here.

Autumn Colours from Essex

Autumn is well and truly here in Essex. The days are short, with very little sunshine, lots of rain, fog or mists rolling in off the sea and low temperatures…..brrrrr!  Time to get the winters warmers out of the closet, but, when the sun does shine we get to see the glorious colours of autumn: all the different shades of red, orange, yellow, brown and green all go to create a symphony 0f colour on the tress, shrubs and the ground.

Autumn Colours

Just shot this picture before the mists rolled in and the sun was about to go down, but what really caught our attention was the heron. Did you spot the heron standing in the field?  Just about in the center of the picture. We’ve seen the herons fly over the field a few times but not seen them anywhere on the land. They have been known to go fishing in the neighbours ponds from time to time, much to their annoyance.

Heron – Ardea cinerea

The heron is a tall elegant bird, normally to be found near reservoirs, lakes, rivers and estuaries and even garden ponds looking for food. It is mainly a solitary bird that stalks its prey silently.

Hoping one day to get a better picture of this elusive bird.

Ycademy Sandbox Fun

Just like when we were children we had a sandbox to play in, an own space to play and try out things, so today’s Ycademy participants have their own Ycademy Sandbox to try out and test new themes and software.  The training sessions provide a lot of  sound knowledge and information in web design but there is no better way to learn than through practical application.  Try and Do!  Test and re-test and have fun.

Ycademy Sandbox Tests

Working on the various themes in a sandbox allows for experimentation and tests and brings out the creativity. We all possess untapped creativity, but in our daily routine and jobs this rarely is expressed and brought to the fore.

Here are a couple of examples of first drafts done on a theme in the Ycademy Sandbox.

Ycademy Sandbox

Kid’s Own Website

Kid’s Own Website

Children love repetition! Watching or reading the same thing over, and over again. Us adults get bored but they just love it. With this in mind  I created a website for my grandson where he can see the things he loves, over and over again. Yes, over on over again. Over time I add more to this website, pictures of things he has seen, is familiar with.  You may say that he doesn’t learn anything new, well its quite the opposite.

With each picture and each viewing he spots something different and then I encourage some new words and tell a little story. It’s amazing how much you get out of one picture with a little bit of imagination.

Kids Love to Learn

Kids love to learn and thats for sure! They see you at the computer, they want to copy. My grandson begs to see the animals and toys  on his website everyday, and with a little help  from me knows all the sounds and names.  What better way to provide education and build confidence in technology that will be part of his everyday life.

Your Kid’s Website

We do need parental control over the things our children see even at an early age.  As parent I know that not all thing online are suitable for young inquisitive minds  and fingers which is why I created a website for my grandson where we have full control of what he sees, adding more familiar images and sounds over time, a website  full of the fun things he loves . There is also a place on his website where he can go to play -  the drawing board, and play with the mouse and learn to click and draw. Total Control of what your child sees and does.

The whole site is a work in progress and will grow with him over the years.

Going Green

Going Green

Watching and listening to the rain lashing against my window today I began to wonder how my little garden was bearing up in this dreadful weather that has hit most of the U.K. in the past few hours. Worse still, there’s more to come! The roses were still in full bloom  and brightening up an autumnal garden, but now no more after the winds have battered them today. Somehow all this talk of things green and garden inspired me to develop a green blog.

Going Green Blog

Last week’s Ycademy trainings left  all participants with a new theme tuned by Semiomantics to turn our hands to over the weekend. No two themes are the same when it comes to checking out what’s behind the backdoor.  Firstly there’s the admin area of the blog and then there is the server side script. With both one has t0 become a little familiar in order to execute a design or redesign a theme. My new Going Green blog required a bit of  time to become familiar with the various features and constraints, however after a bit of work a green blog soon took shape and the site soon developed.

Going Green Blog

Here is my first shot at my Going Green blog.  A little more work is still needed on the web site to cross the ‘t’s and dot the ‘i’s if this was for a customer, however with my time constrainsts these days (my little grandson) it works well as a draft and gives a good idea of what a site can look look like. A theme such as this could be  adapted to  suit most any topic  with a few adaptations to the design, colours and images.  This theme will soon make a great addition to my Small Business Shop.

Your own PhotoBlog

Your own PhotoBlog

Technology moves fast! Blogs begun their rise in popularity around the begining of this century and grew rapidly in numbers when the first hosted blog tools became available. Today most people have heard of a ‘blog’ and ‘blogging’ even if they don’t have one themselves.

Most blogs include images and/or videos and are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments. Today’s trends lean heavily towards the multi media blog, visual communication, expression through images and videos where text becomes of secondary importance unless of course the blog is of an informative nature.

Photoblog

There are many different media blogs, eg: a vlog is a video blog,  however the focus of the photoblog is entirely on photos. What better way to share photos with family, friends than to publish them on a photoblog for all to see. Send them a url and they can come back from time to time to see your latest additions. For someone like myself who loves to take photos and share them this is a great way to build an album over time. Also many photographers use photoblogs as a way to gain exposure for their work and gain credibility online.  Although its called a photo blog you can display anything that uses images.

Semiomantics Photo Blog

If you have ever considered having your own photoblog and need something that’s user friendly then look no further than a Semionmantics powered photoblog. This photoblog can be set up for you to use by Semiomantics Consultant, customised and personalised according to your taste to display your photos in a very elegant way. All photos can be also be categorised and thumbnailed. As a user you just add your photos. In my example above I have used the black background which presents images in a professional way.

Laetitia Paris on Semiomantics Team

The Semiomantics Flame remains in Europe: from Germany it went straight to the beautiful Auvergne in France… and finally, Laetitia Paris is on the Semiomantics Team: Cheers!

Laetitia Paris on Semiomantics Team

Laetitia Paris on Semiomantics Team

Laetitia Paris brings a good grip on code and scripts and a passion for digital photography to the Semiomantics Team… and of course she has a killer advantage as being the bridge between the language of the Internet: English… and French. When it comes to Web Design and Blogging, France Online should be at her feet!!!

This didn’t fall from the sky but needed some serious effort; to follow Ycademy Workshops and Seminars at the time she focused on improving her very basic understanding of English to the point that she could do online presentations in English! Now she’s the ideal partner for any French business or entrepreneur when it comes to Semiomantics Web Design and Internet Marketing… and we all know the French aren’t too keen on learning foreign languages – much easier to work with Laetitia! And much more Fun!

Digital Photography on Semiomantics Evolution Flash

Semiomantics Evolution Flash is a brilliant and modern way to present Digital Photography, especially in connection with Travel and Tourism.

For anyone who plans to visit the Auvergne, the journey should start in a virtual way, namely on the various Flash Websites Laetitia has created, be it on “LandArt“, butterflies or simply on the environment, the culture and current events.

Where will the Semiomantics Flame go from France. . . ?

Creative Semiomantics

Subsequent to last night’s Ycademy session, I would like to draw the attention to two mistakes made:

1. When editing the Demo XML File, don’t correct only lines 29, 35 and 36 but do a ‘search and replace’ throughout the whole document.

2. In footer.php, delete the php closing tag at the beginning of the document and move the php opening tag to the beginning of the first line.

Note: If you end up with 2 About or Contact fields in the menu, make sure you eliminate from the display the corresponding Page IDs from the theme editor.

Creative Semiomantics

Tonight we will quickly review the set-up and then move on to a new smashing, this time easy to configure theme.

Creative with Semiomantics for WordPress

Tonight we will focus on a rather funny theme, interesting for the young and dynamic … and those who remain it :-). The Creative Theme is a strong and consistent 2 color theme, ideal for black and white photos.

The interest is in the high degree of visual communication.
