How to create an A5 folded Postcard

How to create an A5 folded Postcard

Following yesterday’s brief article on “How to create a Postcard“, let me add an excerpt from our next exercises: “How to create an A5 folded Postcard” using ADOBE InDesign – basically the next postcard version we looked into at our final Ycademy Seminar 2012!

How to create an A5 folded Postcard by Bianca Gubalke

How to create an A5 folded Postcard

Again, before trying to figure out how to create an A5 folded Postcard the idea of what you want to achieve – basically the picture inside your mind of what you want to see on this postcard, the Artwork – is what comes first. The rest is technique and can be learned.

In our example, we prepared a photo in portrait format and designated for A5.?? In my case a digital photo of a young emerald sunbird on a budding thorny acacia that I had taken just outside my studio in Noordhoek, South Africa, a few days ago. Yes – blue skies… what a lovely summer we a blessed with!?? The image size: 6 x 4.5 inches x 300 dpi.

Again, I opened ADOBE InDesign and created a new document, selecting an A5, portrait format and 4 pages. One click of the mouse and my layout opens, bleed en all.

A little bit of thought before we start doesn’t harm: we have 4 pages, meaning page 1 is the front and page 4 is the back – these two will be probably printed together to save cost. Note: as they are folded on the left side (seen from the front), we don’t want a bleed here – so when we draw our placing rectangle, bear this in mind (exclude that part). Then pull in your prepared photo or other Artwork and voila! Perhaps you want to add some text? So draw a textbox and write whatever you wish to put there. Choose fonts, size of fonts and perhaps some effects, like a shadow? Make sure the text can be read well and do leave some ‘space’ for the picture to breathe.

You may want to put a text legend on the inside, meaning page 2, bottom – leaving room for the message someone wants to write on pages 2 and 3 (meaning the two inside pages). Note: if you print anything on the inside of Page 2 it means an increase in cost – so you may prefer to place a legend on the back on page 4. However, if you have a nice picture taken in a museum for instance, it looks professional and elegant to see the legend on page 2 – some people just pull off pages 3 and 4 to keep the picture and not the rest – so the legend at the back makes a lot of sense. But if you have a limited budget, rather leave the inner pages 2 and 3 blanc and add your legend or other text on the back page 4.

How to create an A5 folded Postcard by Bianca Gubalke

Page 4 should have a discreet copyright and perhaps some additional text, some promotion or even another picture that corresponds to the photo on page 1 in one or another way. As I do a lot of bird photography, I had created an Apple Touch Icon long ago with the photo of one of the owls I had photographed in the area – so it’s in line with my ‘bird theme’. As I am in the beginning phase of preparing printed matter on the PC, I am still stunned how small objects appear in print as compared with online publishing! The above icon design is 506 x 506 px x 300 dpi – and this is as big as it gets when preparing for print! This will change with a high-quality camera – the more data are available, the higher the output. We are working on it, watch this space… :)

Above is an indication of how the pages in my test example look, excluding page 3 which is blanc. Try to have clean, sober lines that lead the eye, even with that perspective.

ADOBE InDesign

ADOBE InDesign is really THE professional program for preparing print work – and again: talk to your printer well in advance to see which colour settings he prefers on his specific printing machine.

Eileen Cupido on Semiomantics Team

The Semiomantics Flame is back in South Africa!

Our childrens books specialist Eileen Cupido from Cape Town, South Africa, just made her visual appearance on the Semiomantics Team!

Eileen Cupido on Semiomantics Team by Bianca Gubalke Design

While we normally stick to a very reduced color scheme, noone expects black and white for kids books… not even in South Africa :) – and as one never knows what appears when opening childrens books, look at who surprised us here!

Eileen Cupido on Semiomantics Team

Eileen Cupido may have little time to join our trainings, however, she captured a specific scenario following exact idea outlines – and while she may hardly recognize what has happened to the images – here is a real fun version – one of a whole array – that translates the joy and profound satisfaction of working with children… and Eileen just seems to smile at the colorful world around her and – hopefully – brings it to life online!

World Expo 2010 Shanghai

The World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is certainly a destination I would love to go to with some time on my hand – if only there weren’t so many people! WOW!  Beijing Review reports record numbers of visitors… “A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on October 16, a record number since the Expo opened”… which was on May 1, 2010!

Florence Gotil at World Expo 2010 Shanghai

Florence Gotil at World Expo 2010 Shanghai

Luckily, a dear friend from the Philippines took up the challenge and joined the “Grand Gathering of the World Cultures” or even “….the Gala of World Civilization” as it was officially announced, following the motto of this event of superlatives – “Better City, Better Life” – and we see her on the picture here: Florence Gotil at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.

Better City, Better Life

There cannot be either a “Better City” nor any “Better Life” without embracing new, environmentally friendly technologies and acknowledging there is no life for us as human beings without some anchor in Nature. Accordingly, one sees many attempts amongst the wealthier of the well over 200 participating countries to try new avenues.

Please click on the picture above and it will lead you to the official World Expo 2010 Video which shows many highly interesting aspects – and the choice is revelatory! How ‘new’ these concepts are is another question… but certainly what may have been a vision or a dream 30 years or so ago can now find ways of realization – both in terms of technology and funding.

Smart Communication

Smart Communication – online and offline – is the other very interesting aspect of this World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. China is definitely focusing on the Internet and its speedy way to spread information or allow access to it. Much can be expected here in the future!

There is no doubt that Shanghai, with its rich history and culture… and of course as part of the fast evolving and opening colossus China, will play a pivotal role in shaping the world of tomorrow.

Exciting times… and filled with all these impressions and future-oriented concepts, Florence is in the process of developing the plans for her company’s Internet presence. In such a competitive environment, only the best can be considered – in other words: Semiomantics Web Design!

More on this soon. . .

Semiomantics Evolution for WP

Semiomantics Evolution for WP is definitely the most elegant WordPress Theme and the optimum – so far – when it comes to Semiomantics Web Design.

Semiomantics Evolution Team - Gene Line

While most customers are attracted by the “look” of a website, the only way to get this opportunity in the first place is when finding such a captivating website on Google Top 10.

High visibility is what makes Semiomantics Scripts stand out – if set up and configured by members of the Semiomantics Team who learned their craft over many years and are a valuable asset in any web design project a customer may have.

Gene Line on Semiomantics Evolution Team

Gene Line has been a loyal and dedicated Ycademy Pro Member since we met many years ago – and as the Semiomantics Evolution Team is now developing its official image and identity on the Internet, this remarkable gentleman from Kansas in the United States – with an absolute passion for cars and a professional background in the Car & Car parts Industry – will take the Semiomantics flame from South Africa all the way over the Atlantic Ocean… to the United States.

The Semiomantics Flame

So far, the Semiomantics Flame travelled from Greece to South Africa… and now it’s on its way to the USA!
Where will it be going from there . . . ?

To be continued . . .

Facebook Phishing Mails

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Attention: Fake Facebook Mails

Like banks, Paypal, Twitter and others, Facebook is increasingly subject to phishing scams. How to recognize Phishing and Fake Mails?

Phishing for Facebook

The first goal of the scam is to obtain your login credentials to your Facebook account. Here is the mail I have just received:

Facebook Phishing Mail

Facebook Phishing Mail

1. The sender email address looks suspicious.

2. The receiving address is not an email address registered with Facebook, in fact this address does not exist but comes through based on the catch-all function of the mail box.

3. The Subject line is not capitalized – suspicious.

4. if you pass your mouse over (don’t click!) the update button or over the

5. … “click here” link, you see at the bottom of your frame the actual…

6. …target address. The address is not a facebook address, but some scam sub-domain of a .co.uk domain.

How to deal with Phishing Mails

Turn on phishing filters in your system and security software.

Never click on any link in a suspicious mail! Block sender and delete the mail.

You may report the issue to Facebook providing full headers and eventual source code of the mail.

What this Phishing Scam does

If you follow the link in the mail, you are directed to a fake Facebook Login screen with your email address allready filled in. The password field is blank. If you fill in the password, the cyber criminals get full access to your facebook account.

But there is worse:

Zeus Banking Trojan

A pop-up appears inviting you to download an “update tool” which actually installs “ZeuS banking Trojan”. This Trojan waits to steal your banking data next time you type them in.

Check out the Facebook security page for further info.

YORGOO new Orientation

By Yorgo Nestoridis

YORGOO Free Leads and Free Traffic

Time has come to refocus YORGOO. The bases for YORGOO, back in 2005, were Traffic Exchange Programs, Safe-lists and related programs, corresponding to the needs of low-budget Home Business developers.

Free Leads

Free Leads has always been a major YORGOO Keyword. Connecting people and allowing for teams to work together on traffic and lead generation was a great way to develop income at a time when many online businesses were based on building vertical referral structures.

YORGOO Free Leads

YORGOO Free Leads on Google Top 10

Free Traffic

Free traffic by using free programs to promote lead capture pages has built for many a first online income. The growing importance of Google Traffic a few years ago, also for home business builders and the increasing cost of Google Ads, lead YORGOO to refocus it’s action 2 years ago; together with it’s online Educational Program Ycademy and with Semiomantics,YORGOO subscribers started to build highly visible niche sites based WordPress and powered by Semiomantics. The goal was to conquer Google top 10 spots on relevant keywords with well edited and published quality content.

The success is visible all over Google where we have been building content.

Web 2.0 and Social Networks

Web 2.0 developments, namely the arrival and success of social networks opened new avenues for online business developers, namely in the field of Lead Generation. While these social networks, such as MySpace and Facebook have been closed environments for a long time, they have started to open access and to allow for a better flow and exchange of information and content.

Social Networks attract people and generate traffic second only to Google. It is therefore important to provide services which help home business developers to make their products and services available in these high traffic environments associated with a personal profile and behavior which inspires confidence and trust.

YORGOO and Social Networks

The present program software and content of YORGOO are outdated and do not allow for development into the direction we need to target. Development and implementation of new YORGOO program software and products will take an estimated 3 months.

We will therefore temporarily take down YORGOO from the net to develop and release a new, future oriented site by January 29, 2010, the 5th anniversary of YORGOO.

More to come.

Windows 7 Security

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Windows 7 Security

I have been asked about Windows 7 Security and Anti-virus packs. Here is what I am using on my main system which hangs 24/24 on the internet.

Join tonight’s Ycademy call at 8 pm London to learn more and to implement your Windows Security.

Firewall for Windows 7

When 2 years back I uninstalled my Norton Internet Security pack, it was as if my Computer started breathing again. Nothing against the quality of Norton’s filters, but the program was so heavy, that my performance was suffering notably. Also, and this I noticed with most security programs, the interface is not really user-friendly. You need a PhD in firewall configuration in order to use the software efficiently. The basic settings are too timid and tend to scare people more than assuring them because of all the pop-ups indicating that Norton has just saved you again from a Trojan Horse, a Dragon, a witch or other horrors.

My experience is that the Windows Firewall is largely good enough for average and professional users. Maybe that real IT freaks miss all the little buttons and tabs to fine tune the configuration, but that’s a negligible minority anyway. (Yeahhh, I am one of those…).

So, with your Windows 7 just use your Windows Firewall in stead of charging your system with a heavy program (and your budget with 50 bucks per year).

In any case, don’t use two Firewalls; if you use an external program for the purpose, disable the Windows Firewall as running both will result in conflicting behaviors!

Antivirus for Windows 7

Without listing all the popular free and paid programs let me just recommend the

Microsoft Security Essentials

You can use them also on other Windows driven systems. The pack provides an antivirus solution which integrates perfectly with your Windows.

Microsoft Security Essentials are a Beta version (but then, what’s not beta these days anyway – Vista should never have made it even to beta :-)) and it’s free, provided you run Genuine Windows Software.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

“Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.” (As per Microsoft)

The user interface is clear, easy to use and to set up. Read more about Alert Levels.

Why look for complex and costly solutions if an integrated solution is available for free?

PS: The Security Essentials are hooked to Microsoft’s SpyNet – read the terms.
