Facebook Phishing Mails

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Attention: Fake Facebook Mails

Like banks, Paypal, Twitter and others, Facebook is increasingly subject to phishing scams. How to recognize Phishing and Fake Mails?

Phishing for Facebook

The first goal of the scam is to obtain your login credentials to your Facebook account. Here is the mail I have just received:

Facebook Phishing Mail

Facebook Phishing Mail

1. The sender email address looks suspicious.

2. The receiving address is not an email address registered with Facebook, in fact this address does not exist but comes through based on the catch-all function of the mail box.

3. The Subject line is not capitalized – suspicious.

4. if you pass your mouse over (don’t click!) the update button or over the

5. … “click here” link, you see at the bottom of your frame the actual…

6. …target address. The address is not a facebook address, but some scam sub-domain of a .co.uk domain.

How to deal with Phishing Mails

Turn on phishing filters in your system and security software.

Never click on any link in a suspicious mail! Block sender and delete the mail.

You may report the issue to Facebook providing full headers and eventual source code of the mail.

What this Phishing Scam does

If you follow the link in the mail, you are directed to a fake Facebook Login screen with your email address allready filled in. The password field is blank. If you fill in the password, the cyber criminals get full access to your facebook account.

But there is worse:

Zeus Banking Trojan

A pop-up appears inviting you to download an “update tool” which actually installs “ZeuS banking Trojan”. This Trojan waits to steal your banking data next time you type them in.

Check out the Facebook security page for further info.

YORGOO new Orientation

By Yorgo Nestoridis

YORGOO Free Leads and Free Traffic

Time has come to refocus YORGOO. The bases for YORGOO, back in 2005, were Traffic Exchange Programs, Safe-lists and related programs, corresponding to the needs of low-budget Home Business developers.

Free Leads

Free Leads has always been a major YORGOO Keyword. Connecting people and allowing for teams to work together on traffic and lead generation was a great way to develop income at a time when many online businesses were based on building vertical referral structures.

YORGOO Free Leads

YORGOO Free Leads on Google Top 10

Free Traffic

Free traffic by using free programs to promote lead capture pages has built for many a first online income. The growing importance of Google Traffic a few years ago, also for home business builders and the increasing cost of Google Ads, lead YORGOO to refocus it’s action 2 years ago; together with it’s online Educational Program Ycademy and with Semiomantics,YORGOO subscribers started to build highly visible niche sites based WordPress and powered by Semiomantics. The goal was to conquer Google top 10 spots on relevant keywords with well edited and published quality content.

The success is visible all over Google where we have been building content.

Web 2.0 and Social Networks

Web 2.0 developments, namely the arrival and success of social networks opened new avenues for online business developers, namely in the field of Lead Generation. While these social networks, such as MySpace and Facebook have been closed environments for a long time, they have started to open access and to allow for a better flow and exchange of information and content.

Social Networks attract people and generate traffic second only to Google. It is therefore important to provide services which help home business developers to make their products and services available in these high traffic environments associated with a personal profile and behavior which inspires confidence and trust.

YORGOO and Social Networks

The present program software and content of YORGOO are outdated and do not allow for development into the direction we need to target. Development and implementation of new YORGOO program software and products will take an estimated 3 months.

We will therefore temporarily take down YORGOO from the net to develop and release a new, future oriented site by January 29, 2010, the 5th anniversary of YORGOO.

More to come.

Windows 7 Security

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Windows 7 Security

I have been asked about Windows 7 Security and Anti-virus packs. Here is what I am using on my main system which hangs 24/24 on the internet.

Join tonight’s Ycademy call at 8 pm London to learn more and to implement your Windows Security.

Firewall for Windows 7

When 2 years back I uninstalled my Norton Internet Security pack, it was as if my Computer started breathing again. Nothing against the quality of Norton’s filters, but the program was so heavy, that my performance was suffering notably. Also, and this I noticed with most security programs, the interface is not really user-friendly. You need a PhD in firewall configuration in order to use the software efficiently. The basic settings are too timid and tend to scare people more than assuring them because of all the pop-ups indicating that Norton has just saved you again from a Trojan Horse, a Dragon, a witch or other horrors.

My experience is that the Windows Firewall is largely good enough for average and professional users. Maybe that real IT freaks miss all the little buttons and tabs to fine tune the configuration, but that’s a negligible minority anyway. (Yeahhh, I am one of those…).

So, with your Windows 7 just use your Windows Firewall in stead of charging your system with a heavy program (and your budget with 50 bucks per year).

In any case, don’t use two Firewalls; if you use an external program for the purpose, disable the Windows Firewall as running both will result in conflicting behaviors!

Antivirus for Windows 7

Without listing all the popular free and paid programs let me just recommend the

Microsoft Security Essentials

You can use them also on other Windows driven systems. The pack provides an antivirus solution which integrates perfectly with your Windows.

Microsoft Security Essentials are a Beta version (but then, what’s not beta these days anyway – Vista should never have made it even to beta :-)) and it’s free, provided you run Genuine Windows Software.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

“Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.” (As per Microsoft)

The user interface is clear, easy to use and to set up. Read more about Alert Levels.

Why look for complex and costly solutions if an integrated solution is available for free?

PS: The Security Essentials are hooked to Microsoft’s SpyNet – read the terms.

Yorgo Nestoridis Design Brand Header

by Yorgo Nestoridis

Yorgo Nestoridis Design Brand Header

The site header is an important branding element. Logo, font and colors, eventually other visual elements are used to build a positive, recognizable image.

Yorgo Nestoridis Brand

A name can be a brand and if Yorgo Nestoridis wants to be a brand label, then that brand needs to be defined. What is Yorgo Nestoridis? It’s a person, a story, a product, a way to do things, a mission, a quality or an identification tag for all the aforesaid.

In this case, Yorgo Nestoridis stands for the human element behind product labels such as Semiomantics, YORGOO or related products.

Yorgo Nestoridis Logo

The brand elements are a logo in form of a picture or it’s derivatives:

The handwriting font is Dali for the signature and eventual other use at least for the time being; an original font is under construction.

Yorgo Nestoridis Color Scheme

Basically the web site color scheme is white to black with gray shades in between. Color accents are set with red #B30000 or blue #0000b3, black color can be replaced by black-blue #000125.

The example for the Design web site does not use the Dali font as another handwriting font has been used for the site name (Art Decor).The name “by Yorgo Nestoridis” is in Tall Film.

Other schemes namely used for some products are the black-beige theme as seen here:

Beige color is #DECFAB.

This header can be created easily with simple means using GIMP, Photoshop or even Web Graphics Creator.

Windows 7 Multilingual Deployments

Multiple Language Packs can be added to Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise only. The other Windows 7 Editions are referred to as single language editions. Windows 7 Ultimate lets you download language packs to deploy Windows in 36 different languages as I am writing.

Windows 7 Update Windows 7 Language Packs

The language packs are available to Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise users through the System Update link.

If you add multiple language packs to a Windows image, you can deploy the multilingual edition of Windows in a multilingual environment, and the end users can switch the display language between multiple languages on a single computer.

Can your Computer run Windows 7

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Can your System run Windows 7

In general, if your PC or Laptop runs Windows Vista, it can run Windows 7. To find out exactly what will run and where eventual problems may occur, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft.

Upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7

The upgrade is a smooth matter and what runs on Windows Vista should also run on Windows 7. During the install procedure Windows 7 will check your system and log eventual problem zones. The upgrade will take time, be prepared to let it run for hours (in my case it was 15 hours) namely if your hard drive is packed with hundreds of Gigabytes of data.

Installing Windows 7 on your Laptop

If your laptop runs Windows Vista, it will run Windows 7. If you use XP, then run the Upgrade Advisor for a check.

From Windows XP to Windows 7

Microsoft requires a clean install if you wish to upgrade from Windows 7. Furthermore, the note on Microsoft’s  Upgrade Advisor Page is self explanatory:

“..And while we don’t recommend it, should you choose to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7, we recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. You’ll need to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs.”

Blockquote, Pullquote and Code

Blockquote and Code

On WordPress powered web sites Blockquote and Code tags can help to edit posts in a more attractive and differentiated way. By Semiomantics XO styles the blockquote as a “pullquote”; the difference between block and pullquote is that text wraps around pullquotes, while blockquotes keep empty space left or right of the blockquote.

What is a Blockquote

According to Wikipedia:

“In HTML and XHTML, the blockquote element defines a block quotation within the text.”

The style of blockquotes is defined in the CSS style sheet. In Semiomantics XO, you find the relevant entry under #leftcontent blockquote.

Blockquote in your Style Sheet

#leftcontent blockquote {
width: 250px;
font-size: 24px;
line-height: 26px;
float: right;
margin: 0 0 0 30px;
padding: 0;
font-style: italic;
}

#leftcontent blockquote p {
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
}

The style sheet defines the width of the box as well as some other style elements. All parameters can be easily changed and others can be added, such as a background color or image, a font family and more.

On this site we have added a background in light gray #eaeaea as well as we have defined the font family. In order to insert some vertical space after the blockquote, we have added a margin of 20px at the bottom and decreased the left margin from 30px to 20px.

The Blockquote in this site’s Style Sheet:

#leftcontent blockquote {
width: 400px;
background: #eaeaea;
font-size: 16px;
line-height: 18px;
float: right;
margin: 0 0 20px 20px;
padding: 5px;
font-style: italic;
font-family: 'trebuchet ms',
verdana, sans-serif; color: #000125;
}

Here is the code as used on this site.
You notice that this text wraps around the blockquote: for this reason we call this special case of blockquote a “pullquote”.

Note that the font style is italic for the blockquote content, the code font style in red however is normal.

Also, in view of the large column width we increase the blockquote width to 400 pixels.

Code in this site’s style sheet

To differentiate between the blockquote style and the code style, we need to define “code” in the style sheet. By default the Semiomantics XO style sheet has no entry for “code”.

For this reason we just add a few lines of code after the blockquote definition in the style sheet.

Here is what I have entered for the purpose of this site:

#leftcontent code {
font-family: courier, monospace;
color: #b30000;
font-style: normal;
}

We define the font family and use namely monospace fonts. Then we add color and we make sure the fonts will be in normal style as opposed the italic style in the blockquote.

Pullquotes in Semiomantics XO

According to Wikipedia:

“A pull quote (also known as a lift-out quote or a call-out) is a quotation or edited from an article that is typically placed in a larger typeface …” and according to wiktionary: “… In newspaper and magazine publishing, a brief excerpt drawn from an article and used out of context…”.

Semiomantics XO uses the blockquote feature by default as a pullquote. The difference is in the style: text wraps around pullquotes.

The above use and style of the pullquote is defined in function of the use we make of this feature: this web site features web design elements and samples and therefore we focus first of all on text and text style.

Other applications entail other style definitions. If you use the pullquote feature mainly for featuring images, you may style the pullquote as defined in one of our earlier posts HERE.
